This adds nothing to the discussion but at first I thought - "shoot" I just got my 27" iMac in January! Then I remembered I bought a "refurb" so I'd have to wait at least another 3 months before the new models started to show up in the refurb store. And with 12GB of RAM my i7 is by far the best computer I have ever owned, fast, quiet, and what a beautiful screen!
Like my iPad1, going to skip this generation and wait for the next.

This will probably go over like a lead balloon, but there is something to be said for natural selection. NOW BEFORE YOU START SCREAMING, hear me out...
AIDS is an awful thing, especially to the proportions it has affected the people of Africa. But there is also a reason AIDS has taken over there the way it is, and it's only partially to do with poverty. AIDS has exploded in that population, because it is a population that is extremely traditional, rudimentary, and in many ways archaic. There are many wonderful things about the African people, but there were also many wonderful things about the Dinosaurs, the Dodo bird, and numerous others.
Please don't take this to mean I'm equating the people of Africa with wild animals. I'm not. But in many ways, the people of Africa are in the situation they are in because they have not evolved the same way as most of the world, and in that respect, they are paying a price. Yes, it is our responsibility as human beings to try and help people in need, and that is a wonderful thing. But at the end of the day, if we did nothing, there would still be a small percentage of African people who will survive this epidemic, and they will be more educated and elightened than the ones who do not.
Much in the way that forest fires, although terrible in some respects, are essential to the rejuvenation of the population and ecosystem in that area, so too are epidemics and catastrophes. And this not a bash-on-Africa comment... the Black Plague was the same idea. Too many people, living in too close quarters, with too little regard for health or wellbeing. Millions died, but many survived, and the ones that did were smarter and wiser for it.
The people of Africa are not necessarily as helpless as the may seem from the outside. They just have a different culture and mindset than Western people do. Right or wrong is not for us to decide, but adapting to nature is part of life on Earth... and sometimes that means that large numbers of people or animals die, needlessly or otherwise. Just my two cents.
Dude... That has to be the most racist thing I have ever read!
Evolved???? And comparing humans to natural selection of animals????

For all of Steve Jobs' zen-attitude, vegetarianism, often-proclaimed "do the right thing" stance, and Apple's financial liquidity, there's no reason why other manufacturers can make the change and Apple isn't willing to move in the right direction with their products.
can anyone--maybe you, true777, since i assume you're making the statement above based on personal knowledge--post pics showing the packaging for a Dell or Gateway or HP notebook computer vs apple's packaging for a comparable product? What about iPod packaging vs that for other MP3 players?
until we know the differences, it's hard to know where to stand on this issue, and impossible to conclude "there's no reason why other manufacturers can make the hange and apple isn't willing..."

Hilarious to all those people who jumped on the THUNDERBOLT bandwagon. No thunderbolt devices yet and they have the hideous old case design.
Erm...i'm guessing they bought it for Quad-Core/AMD 6750 rather than Thunderbolt. Also really? hideous?

Wow, what a fail for Micro$oft, no no I mean MicroSoft (you don't get an $ in your name anymore).
Instead of making: $5,990,000,000.00
They only made: $5,230,000,000.00
What a bunch of losers. :\

Man, stop it with the cloud service already. You can't rely on the internet availability for listening to music. It's unreliable. Plus, the streaming will probably be low resolution, drain battery life, eat into data caps, not display lyrics, and generally be a crappy experience. If I wanted to stream, I can do it from my home computer where my music already resides with one of the 100 apps already available and not have to fight through all the bandwidth issues that are probably gonna result from Apple's side. What's the point? I can do this now.
Of course what we really need if more friggin' flash memory on our devices! Apple's been stuck on 32 GB on the iPhone for almost 3 years!
Tony
Good points made. Like I complained about, cellular data connectivity when out and about isn't very reliable and then there is data caps.

You can still use Safari and look this info up on a website. Checkpoints should be illegal anyway. They pretty much are anyway but they have their loophole which makes it ok. It's a moneymaker for the county or city. I went through a checkpoint a while back just south of Charlotte in SC. The driver was being arrested for DUI and one of the passengers for having a pain pill without a Rx. The cops asked me how much cash I had on me to make this trouble disappear for my friends. After I told them that I don't carry cash, they point me to the ATM that was conveniently located steps away from the checkpoint. I told them to go eff themselves. Then they treated me like a POS and made me walk home on a dark street at 3 am. I didn't really mind. It gave me an opportunity to burn the beer calories like I normally would the next day. I didn't have my phone. Corruption is everywhere, people. I dislike most people that where the badge. Yeah, I'm prejudice in the same way that they are prejudice towards most citizens.

this model apple is using is fine, but 2 things need to happen, 1, much the same as netflix, they should send you a blank dvd with case for each order, and secondly, like the music, all cover art should be given as well. it should be burnable, I would pay 9.99 for movie with the convinience of download, for this proce, even with the less quality if I could burn my own dvd, put it in any dvd player and watch it. but I want all the artwork as well, so i can FEEL my dvd library growing,

What? I don't get it.
You cannot CUT and paste in SL, only COPY and paste using the built in OS shortcuts.
I hate having to open two folders just to drag a file to MOVE it, so I had to pay $4 in the MAC App Store to get that functionality...

I was thinking how they would be able to deliver movies of large sizes, and it seems to me if that they are going with full resolution feature length films, they will have to use BitTorrent, Quantum Streaming, or some other unknown method. If they do this right, this will be more innovating than iTunes/iPod legal music download. But will the customers buy.....

The Beatles did this to Apple, oh wait, they had Apple Records and the Apple logo for over 5 years before Apple Computer existed. But I'm sure that is overlooked.
As I mentioned in the other thread, you might actually want to take a look at the Apple Records logo before you make silly arguments that the Apple Computer logo is a copy.
And as cmaier clearly explained to you, this is a different scenario entirely as they were in two completely different industries at that time.
Oh, and what do the Beatles have to do with partnering technology companies turning around and stabbing their partner in the back? Nothing.

Does anyone else think something more might be coming? With the price drop of both models and the lack of drastic changes ie the rumored full screen, bluetooth, and virtual click wheel?
Could there be a "one more thing..." next week?

Are there any Thuderbolt devices yet?
Yes ... it is called MacBook Pro. If you climb outside of the typical PC mentality of just added peripherals with higher data rates (you'll eventually get that) ... the bigger issue is in using the light weight, very mobile, long battery life Airs to do the initial creative input on the road ... then link them back to the big, high power computers to finish up the heavy rendering and post production work. Look at the refresh on Final Cut Pro. Look at Adobe's latest offerings ... all with leaning toward iOS. You'll like see a 30 pin adapter for iPad2 and above with thunderbolt out so they can be used as well. Apple is planning on selling more of its offerings and are speeding up the data exchange rates on high performance operations.
As apple goes cloud backup the need for high data transfer rates goes way up.
The bottle neck right now is the carriers both in speed and cost.

Hi all.
If you look at Apple's iMac site today before the next announcement, you see "consistency" with the expected message of a 23" HDTV iMac and a video streaming enabled AirPort Express.
The product is currently positioned as a hub for your entertainment experience. If you are a leading edge user, you have already hooked a kickin' audio system via hardwire or AirPort Express.
You already have remote control.
You already have, and share internet, printing, and even distributed content to computers in other rooms, presumably some of which are kickin' stereo enabled, all of which have access to your pool of media content.
Therefore in a real way such an announcement would be a relatively small harwdare upgrade while upgrading perception, desire and buzz emmensely.
They need a "significant hardware sales driver". Is this it?

It *is* private now. This information isn't broadcast anywhere but your own personal computer in the form of an encrypted backup file. The information won't go anywhere but with you and your property.
However, if your iphone gets stolen, the GPS log is likely the least private thing you need to worry about. The thief will have access to your entire contact list, browsing history, etc..
Agree to that, but why is it being collected without permission?

Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware and other malicious and unwanted software or programs. The idea that OSX and/or Unix/Linux based operating systems is free from such threats is absurd.
No one has presented the idea that Mac OS X is free from all malware threats. Since your reading comprehension might need some help, I'll repeat my statement again:
there is no Mac malware in the wild that can't be avoided with some common sense and prudent action on the part of the user.
Viruses for Mac OS X don't exist, so antivirus isn't needed to protect against them.
Trojans for Mac OS X do exist, but can be avoided by the user being careful what they install, so antivirus isn't needed to protect against them.
Meanwhile, the answer on here to avoiding potential pitfalls in things like Flash is to (surprise), not install or use it. Hey guys, don't power on your computers and you will always be safe!
I use Flash all the time and have never had any issues with it.
Even Apple themselves regularly release security updates. WTF is the point of a security update if there's no possible threat to OSX?
Again, no one has said there are not threats to Mac OS X; only that those threats don't require any AV software to defend against them.
Just because a threat is less likely than on other systems does not mean that it does not exist. Yet people on here won't even admit that much.
Either you're not reading or not comprehending the posts that have been made. No one is saying that NO threats exist; only that those threats can be avoided by the user without the need for AV software.
Only a fanboy would take a post that suggests that a false sense of security can lead to dangerous behavior that might be a liability in the future (good advice in almost any market/situation) and twist it into "Boy you're ignorant; we are INVULNERABLE! OSX cannot be hacked or attacked! It's impossible!
Who are you referring to? I haven't seen anyone say such things in this thread or any other.
"fanboy"
Again, who are you referring to? I'm not a fanboy, or a boy of any kind. I have no allegiance or loyalty to any brand or manufacturer (except Harley-Davidson, but for very different reasons). It's amusing to see how people try to bash Apple or Macs for the wrong reasons, then resort to calling people "fanboys" when their arguments aren't accepted. Apple and Macs have plenty of weaknesses. Attack one of the legitimate ones and you'll have sensible people agree with you. Make a case against Apple or John Deere or Mattel or Coca-Cola or any other company that isn't based in fact, and you'll get resistance. That doesn't make those who oppose such a case "fanboys".

Looks like the iPods are still at 5G with some tweaks, which is weird considering they had a whole year. I feel no urge to upgrade my current model no major difference for me. Search functions would be pretty sweet though. Wonder why they didnt just give the current 5G iPods that feature with a software update.
The new nanos look really tempting. a 4GB silver would go nicely with my PB.
my thoughts exactly... there aren't that much of a difference, right??
anyway, hey, are the search functions gonna be attainable for the last 5gen ipod as well ? with the software update??? i wish that's the case......please
i've been desperately looking for the reasons as to stick to the old 5gen which i bought just yesterday

My iMacs have 2 Firewire ports (a 27" and a 24") which I use for TM and a SD clone external. The new iMacs only have one FW port - with 4 USB connections. Seems like a slower way to have to back up, and I see no externals out there that run Thunderbolt.
Am I missing something?

I believe Microsoft's #1 problem is that they are the king of generic names for products:
Word for word processing.
Windows for a graphical user interface that has content stores in windows.
Perhaps the only "cool" names Microsoft has are Excel and Xbox?
Damit! They want App Store for selling apps and Apple's already taken it.
Perhaps their argument will be, "How come Apple did not just name their online store the iApp Store, geez...."
Perhaps Microsoft will be left with no alternative but to use the mokier, "Microsoft Store," "Software Store," or "Soft Store?" They could even just call their store "M$ Store."
