    i present you...

    the mediamac:
    http://www.twirl.ch/mc/other/mediamac.jpg

I would be happy if it was in aluminium and in black to allow better cooling. But that would be mighty fine.

Would be nice with a usb and firewire port in front as well.

Should I continue to use the free Sophos or switch to the ESET paid AV?

On a iMac for business and home use.

    Thanks for any insight.

    CIA...

That setup screams 'old, slow legacy stuff'.

Why should a new iteration of the MacPro be a hostage to someone wanting a housing for 6 of their old, slow and small drives?

Why support 3 or 4 eSATA and Firewire expansion PCIe cards when that can all be done over a single Thunderbolt cable?

Sounds like your setup needs a bit of a spring clean. A newer, smaller box would force you to consolidate onto a smaller number of bigger and faster drives (those 150GB raptors are slow by today's standards).

Yah CIA, I think you'd be surprised with what little you can get by on these days in smaller boxes and with Thunderbolt.

And I agree with you, I hate tapes...lol. I wish we would go to 1 damn standard but we know that is how people make their money...no standards. I'm so sick of all the formats and all the output formats. I just want 1080p and that's it. Burn the rest. ;)

    Hmm.. interesting turn of events.

Though I will still wait until that time gets closer and the speculation changes/gets more accurate, I suppose there's no reason not to go ahead and ditch this P.O.S. Blackberry for an iPhone.

Ok, so you don't know how jailbreaking works. Here's the deal:

Jailbreakers find a flaw in the OS and find a way to break in. That same flaw could be used by hackers to attack my non-jailbroken phone.

So Apple has to fix that hole to protect me. That has the side effect of not making the jailbreak anymore, but what do you want them to do? They have to protect me, the customer, when they find a security flaw. Right?

So that's what they do. Anyone who argues that Apple should just leave secuity holes in their OS isn't really being realistic.

While I agree in a sense, it's commonly known that there's no way to plug every hole, so you're scooping out water from a sinking ship with a cup. Every iOS device has been jailbroken since release, many several times using several exploits. There will never be a day when a software company will be smarter than the hacking community... software companies can't afford to buy them all :-)

So I've played with the TomTom iPhone Car Kit for a couple of days and here's my initial observations.

    * I do not like the bluetooth speaker phone built-in for phone calls. It is far inferior to my BluAnt, but luckily it seems I can have both connected and easily switch back and forth.

    * Lastly, this is the thing that may make me return it...it rattles, as it is not built very well!! Where the car kit spins to landscape, it is just a little too loose of a setup. Does everyone else have this problem or do I have a defective unit? Would love to know if its worth bothering to exchange it. Thanks!

I had two different TomTom iPhone Car Kits that I returned because of the bluetooth speaker phone. It would keep breaking up and I was unable to hear all of the other party's conversation. I had mine in the vertical position so I did not notice any rattle. I have ordered the Magellan Premium car kit which from early indications performs better for the bluetooth and positioning.

Santa Rosa isn't a chipset, it's the name of the platform.

It consists of Merom (eventually Penryn?), Crestline (i965 express chipset) and Kedron (802.11n).

Santa Rosa won't affect performance a great deal.

The faster FSB will make a difference of maybe 3-5%. Maybe a little more in bandwidth-sensitive applications (say, some forms of decompression).

Less than than the difference between Yonah and Merom.

The other big differences are the new graphics core -- which the MBP won't use, the 802.11n - for which the spec hasn't yet been ratified, and is something easily added by changing/adding a wifi card, and the Robson flash caching technology, which is probably the biggest difference.

Note that Crestline is currently specced at consuming ~50% more power than the i945 chipset in Napa. Robson, however, should reduce some of that.

It's quite ironic that after years of Powerbooks getting new G4's with tiny clockspeed boosts, something like Merom is considered "bland"(?)Thank You For This Excellent Analysis Of Santa Rosa And What It Will And Won't Be ergle2. Best I've read anywhere here so far.

    LAME

$2,499 standard price of Mac Pro ($2,299 for Education)

$2,124 is the lowest you can configure the Mac Pro ($1,962 for Education)

To get it that low, you have to drop the processors from 2.66GHz to 2GHz and and the hard drive from 250GB to 160GB

Airport Extreme & Bluetooth 2.0 still not standard

Weak graphics card standard (GeForce 7300, ugh)

    and as a sidenote:

MacBook Pro & MacBook processors untouched

     iMac untouched

iPod product line grows more stale by the day

I see this as fine for the majority of Apple users but for those that "tinker" or need/want to reinstall OS X after a new hard drive install or just for the hell of it, it means reinstalling Snow Leopard first then re-downloading Lion from the App Store then upgrading.
    Very time consuming.

There are times when I need to pop in the disc to fix a problem.
I'll just drive to the local Apple store and pick up a hard copy myself.

I've never heard of this company -- are they reputable, does anyone know? I've heard all sorts of stories abut these types of things being spyware or some such, don't want to pollute my Mac with any of that garbage!

    You're joking right?!

They are the one of the biggest security product vendors!

I have installed this, no slow down and it doesn't get in the way.

I have it installed as I frequently share files with Windows users and don't want to be a carrier.

Have you seen Windows GUI? It's also almost identical - rows of icons and task bar at the bottom. Did Microsoft sue Apple? No.

That's because Microsoft copied Apple (or NeXT really.) The NeXT dock predates the taskbar in Windows, and at the time a lot of people felt that's where Microsoft got the taskbar from.

If you go back to Windows 3.1, no taskbar. And then suddenly Windows 95 which shipped after NeXTStep, there is a taskbar.

The fact that they are now suing Samsung, and waited this long, might give validity to this theory, as they did not want to sue them while Sammy was still a key supplier for them.

    Something to think about.

Actually Apple just recently got granted those designs for iOS and iPhone 3GS, they were waiting for US Patent Office to approve them.

I have just installed Sophos Anti Virus - what a mistake!

I decided to install it because I have been a long term user of Sophos at work on the corporate PC and having installed the latest OSX I saw virus checkers in the App Store and a recommendation for Sophos there in a reference for another product.

I ran a scan and a couple of PC specific malware files were found and destroyed.

Then I noticed that my Time Machine back up was struggling.

It turns out that there are issues with Sophos and Time Machine.

I moved my Time Machine back ups to a DroboFS in December I have now lost all my back ups since then.

Once I have backed up again I will be deinstalling it - bet I find that I loose the new back up then!

If theres no announced release date it can't be delayed. It would just be later than usual. Thats not the same thing. I'm all for waiting. The longer I hang on to my 3GS the more reason I have to upgrade. Just hope It doesnt break so I can sell it to help cover the cost.
Actually, one can say it is delayed. With previous four major iOS updates being consistently released in summer, the Fall release is nothing but a delay.

According to New Oxford American Dictionary anyway:

    • postpone or defer (an action).

    All hail Tim Cook!

Seriously though, I think people are going to be surprised at how well RIM rebounds. Not that they are going to stop or even slow the iPad or iPhone train, but I will surprised if they don't carve themselves out a pretty good niche.

They're a much more resilient company than that for which they are given credit. Do some serious research into the company as though you were looking to invest, and you'll find out that they got a little too complacent for a time, but they have some vision that will surprise people in the coming years.

RIM can be a serious player again. They have the name and the resources as well as the most experience in the corporate world with mobile communications. But, they are loosing ground to Apple and Google based equipment faster than you can shake a stick and they don't seem to be using all their resources very well at this time.

Remind us about what? Please be a little less cryptic because some people are tired here :p

lol sorry... just saying that products dont necessarily have to wait the 6 month grace period before bein upgraded.

iMac was drastically upgraded from G5 to Core Duo after just 3 months.

Could be the same with the current line-up.

Companies have a right then to make money on it and Apple cannot actively try to cut off the ability of another company to make money off the Iphone legally, its called restraint of trade, a federal law.

Yes they can. There is no protection under law for making money off the ineptitude of other companies. Apple is entitled, and expected to fix bugs. When those bugs get fixed, an avenue for jail breaking gets closed. Companies that see their revenue stream dry up are just screwed. That's life.

Jail breaking happens because Apple screwed the pooch on security. That's all.

Why put it in the App Store if it isn't an App?

Because it has a payment system and delivery system in place.

But it isn't an app. It's an OS upgrade.

    Image (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/23/171415-background.jpg)

A finding earlier this month (http://osxdaily.com/2011/04/02/new-mt-fuji-wallpaper-in-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) by OSXDaily has generated some speculation about Apple's plans for "Retina" display Macs. The Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 released in late March (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/30/apple-releases-mac-os-x-lion-developer-preview-2/) included an ultra-high resolution version of the background desktop image at a resolution of 3200x2000. A few observers noted (http://punchingin.com/chasing-the-6-4-megapixel-unicorn/) that this is higher than any Apple display has ever supported, generating speculation (http://theelaborated.net/blog/2011/4/13/consider-the-retina-display.html) that Apple is preparing for "Retina" display Macs in the near future.

We had previously reported (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/24/mac-os-x-lion-building-in-support-for-super-high-resolution-retina-monitors/) that Mac OS X Lion has made some under-the-hood changes opening the door to such super-high resolution displays. Now, MacMagazine.com.br has found (http://macmagazine.com.br/2011/04/23/macs-com-telas-retina-nao-sao-duvida-quando-eles-chegarao-sim-ainda-e-uma-incognita/) that Apple is already starting to include other super high resolution artwork in Lion. They found several icons stored as 1024x1024 sizes, up from a previous maximum of 512x512.

    Image (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/23/171147-23-lion_appstore.png)

    Click for full-size

Of course, this support for super high resolution displays is only the first step, but suggests Apple is planning ahead when the hardware becomes available.

Article Link: Apple Including Ultra High Resolution Artwork in Lion for Possible Retina Displays? (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/23/apple-including-ultra-high-resolution-artwork-in-lion-for-possible-retina-displays/)

Oh please. Give me a break! Do you nitwits HONESTLY think there will be retina display Macs in the near future? It's total BS. If they did, the cost of said Macs would be prohibitive to the general public. Why do you think there aren't retina display iPads? IT'S TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE! C'mon guys...you're beginning to sound like CNET
